Leader in Me

Leader in Me

ARCHES Academy is committed to inspiring scholars to be the leaders of tomorrow by honoring the gifts within each and every child. Alongside our individualized academics, we provide a strong character and leadership development program that emphasizes universal values and truly heroic behavior.

One component of our character education program is the Leader in Me based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People® by Stephen Covey. ARCHES Academy has adopted this program for its research-backed approach to developing leadership skills and flexible, critical thinkers.

Here is a brief explanation of the 7 Habits from Leader in Me and how ARCHES harnesses these traits in all of our students:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

Make good choices. We teach students to evaluate consequences and make the best choice. Students are encouraged to take initiative and own their learning and actions.

Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind

Plan ahead. After analyzing the school mission statement and their Patrol’s mission statement, every student writes a personal mission statement to help them keep their goals in mind at all times.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Work first, then play! Students learn to use a planner, organize their time, and how to prioritize the “big rocks” (or big things) first to effectively use their time. We help them determine what is most important and how to tackle a project into smaller parts when it might seem too big.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

We believe in finding balance. The teaching of empathy and conflict resolution support an environment where all students can find success. We encourage students to think about what makes it a win for everybody involved.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then be Understood.

We model listening to understand, practicing empathy, and seeing things from another’s viewpoint. We balance consideration for other’s feelings with the courage to stand up for what we need.

Habit 6: Synergize

Sometimes 1+1 does not equal 2. Sometimes it equals 3 or 50! Embracing all ideas through creative thinking and problem solving helps us find the best solution. Don’t compromise, synergize. Often, the solution is something you didn’t consider at the beginning.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

This is a habit of balance. We encourage everyone to take a close look at their whole life: Are you staying healthy? Taking care of relationships? Nurturing your spiritual life? If you’re not taking care of these important areas of your life, you can’t focus on work.

These habits are woven into many parts of our day. It’s easy to see where each of these Habits can fit into all aspects of our learning—from PE to Patrol to science to writing—these well-tested and proven habits are easily applied throughout our lives.

Each week during recognition assemblies, one of our Patrols will put on a skit for the whole school to illustrate a habit and how it might reflect in a real-life situation. It’s fun and authentic learning, as well as a great opportunity for our students to express themselves!

Should a discipline issue arise, we examine the 7 Habits for a path forward. Which habit was not being upheld? Was this a win-win situation for everyone? Can we do something better next time?

ARCHES Academy inspires children to be leaders in their own lives and for their school community. We believe that all students possess unique talents and abilities—it is our job to help them identify and use these traits to make a difference. We can help your child uncover their greatness, too.
