ARCHES Academy gets kids. We know that kids are brilliant, curious, and energetic. We know that they are at their best when they are engaged and have ownership over their learning. And we know that like adults, they are active learners who learn by exploring, touching, doing, and trying.
Our small K-8 school is an especially good choice for students who find that the traditional model of sitting still at a desk all day just isn’t working for them. It may also be a great choice for neuro-diverse students, like those with ADHD, who require a differently structured day and personalized educational support. If the idea of allowing your child to learn at his/her own pace in a hands-on, minds-on learning environment sounds appealing to you, then bring us your active, curious kid!
ARCHES Academy has intentionally created a school that maximizes student attention span and harnesses the positive energy that children bring to class. Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may benefit from our unique setting.
Each of our class sessions during the day is only 30 minutes long. Our talented teachers present new skills and information in small chunks that gradually build upon each other. Large concepts are broken down into manageable bites of knowledge and revisited as needed until we have turned the abstract into the concrete.
What’s best for the body is also best for the brain! Along with short lessons, we make sure our students are up and moving often. An active brain requires an active, fit body! We use flexible seating options to help children keep their bodies engaged while learning new tasks. We also take frequent brain breaks in the classroom, as well as get outside for recess. And of course, our PE classes keep kids moving and building strong muscles while having fun.
Learning isn’t hard when you are having fun!
In addition to respecting the attention span of children, we make learning fun and engaging at ARCHES! When hands-on learning is in action, students move their bodies, discuss the process, delight in discoveries, and truly interact with the lesson!
Our use of individual binders for students to keep their work together can also help students with ADHD who are challenged by organizational skills. Teachers walk students through the use of this important tool, helping to promote preparedness and organization.
Our annual Science Fair brings student questions and research to life. Students have the opportunity to ask a question, design an experiment, and observe the process to uncover scientific principles. It’s learning in action and it’s highly motivating!
Art and music are woven into our day at all opportunities through projects and lessons. Weekly art and music classes are a highlight for students and a chance to dig in and try something new. We also hold enrichment classes on Fridays to help kids find new interests!
Our youngest learners at ARCHES enjoy the type of kindergarten program you remember from your youth—developmentally appropriate with lots of play and social learning in a hands-on, exploratory environment.
