For The Love Of Our Country: Patriotism at ARCHES Academy

At ARCHES Academy, we say the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. Every morning that is how we start our day. We do this because we believe in this pledge, we teach what the pledge means, and we do this daily to remind our kiddos why this pledge is so important.

Over 200 years ago, the Founding Fathers of the United States of America wrote a Constitution. Today, the values of our Constitution are still relevant and valid. It is important that we protect our Constitution and the freedom it gives all of us. The Constitution established America's national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens. We teach our kiddos the importance of this and the significance of the history of the Constitution.

ARCHES Academy celebrates a Veteran’s Day program. Honoring and praising the Americans who have fought for our country is something we proudly teach our students. Last year the kids sang “Freedom Isn’t Free” because standing up for freedom is a right.

Government is never perfect, so we don’t teach our students that our government is perfect. Our government is run by people and people are imperfect. Our expectations shouldn’t be for a perfect system. What we DO teach is that the government is for the people. We stress the importance that we all participate in our country’s government. Citizens have a civic duty. Teaching, explaining, demonstrating and discussing our duties as citizens brings us much joy. It instills a sense of patriotism early on in our students’ lives.

We like to share Senator John McCain’s story when he was a prisoner of war with our ARCHES family. McCain started his story, “Let me tell you what I think about our Pledge of Allegiance, our flag, and our country.” He went on to describe the years he spent as a war prisoner and how a fellow American soldier, Mike Christian, who was imprisoned with him used a bamboo needle that he created to stitch the American flag on the inside of his shirt. The prisoners hung that shirt in the cell, and said the Pledge of Allegiance to it everyday. One day the guards tossed the cell and found the shirt with the American flag inside of it. The guards punished Christian brutally. When they put him back in his cell, in very rough shape, the first thing he did was start to sew another flag. McCain said, “He was not making that flag because it made Mike Christian feel better. He was making that flag because he knew how important it was for us to be able to pledge our allegiance to our flag and our country.”

Our entire school says the Pledge of Allegiance daily to instill a sense of patriotism amongst students and to pay homage to the Americans before us who worked so hard to protect and defend our country. We want our kiddos to learn the true meaning of liberty and justice for all.
